Minko Oleg

Was born on August 3, 1938 in Makiivka, Donetsk region, Ukraine. Graduated from the Lviv State Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts in 1965. His art teachers were R.Selsky, K.Zvirynsky and D.Dovboshynsky.
Since 1982 works at the Lviv Institute of Decorative and Applied Art /now Lviv Academy of Arts/. Head of the Department, Professor, Honoured Artist of Ukraine.

Creative life started in 1960. His artistic, social and political views were formed under the influence of the «catacomb» group of artists (the so called «shistedesiatnyky», artists of the 60es) organized by Karl Zvirynsky which opposed the ideology of the party regime reigning at that time. The group included R.Petruk, Z.FIinta, A.Bokotey, P.Markovych, B.Soyko, I.Marchuk, L.Tsehelska, L.Medvid, 0.Minko. Persecutions, psychic attacks and repressions on the part of the authorities influenced the artist''s fate. He resumed painting only in 1978, turning to landscapes, still life, portraits of relatives and friends.
1987 marked a new turn in O.Minko''s creation. He resumed the subjects of the 60es, revaluating them in a new light.

Oleh Minco is an original artist, he is not like any other in world art. All his works are to a certain extent autobiographical, as he always tries to express in his pictures his own vision of the world. According to the artist "art is not a decoration, it is a way to self-perfection and cognition of life through aesthetic categories, a way of the author''s communication with other people and God". This was why his fellow-artist Petruk has once said: "Everything you paint, even a leaf in the tree, is your autobiography." Oleh Minko avoids direct definitions of the content of his pictures, hates attaching titles to them, his spectator is supposed to reveal their inner meaning by himself. In this the artist sees the communicative function of art.

Oleh Minko participated in various exhibitions in Lviv, Kiev, Vilnius, Alitus, Moscow, Helsinki, London, Washington, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia etc.

In 1998 was recognized as the Best Artist of the Year and Laureate of the "Gerdan" gallery in Lviv.
